Urinary & Genital Reconstruction Surgery
If you’ve had bladder cancer or another medical condition that has interfered with your urinary function, you most likely need a urinary reconstruction procedure. Our team of medical experts at Advanced Urology Associates wants all of our patients to be informed about common urinary and genital reconstruction surgery procedures which provide an alternative method to letting urine evacuate the body.
There are two common types of urinary reconstruction procedures:
- Incontinent diversion: This procedure is done at the same time as bladder surgery. It involves a urostomy, which uses an opening in the abdomen, or a stoma, to help urine exit the body. A urostomy bag and urostomy tube are placed outside the body and collect the urine.
- Continent urinary diversion: This procedure actually creates a new artificial bladder so you can control when urine leaves your body. There are two types of continent urinary diversion. The first is a cutaneous continent diversion, where urine is drained via a stoma through a catheter several times a day. The second type is an orthotopic neobladder, or a new artificial bladder that empties through the urethra.
Important Facts about Urostomy Care
After receiving a urostomy, you will need a few weeks to recover and adjust. Refrain from heavy lifting or physical activity. Once you’ve healed from the procedure, you’re able to return to normal life. The urostomy bag does not interfere with your day-to-day. You can work, exercise, play sports, be social, and typically do anything you could before the procedure. There are no dietary restrictions.
Of course, it’s always important to speak to your doctor about how to care for your urostomy in everyday life. There may be some occupational limits, but it can depend on your individual situation. In some cases, a urostomy occasionally affect a man’s sexual abilities, but this typically only lasts for a short period of time. Again, be sure to talk to your doctor if you face any issues.
